Members' Exhibits

We  take on the challenge of a SIGNATURE Composite Puzzel painting every odd year.  We create a Series Puzzle painting the even years.  We work on 12x12 and 12x24 canvases.  All combined paintings are usually 3x4 feet.

The Topic Series of paintings have included, Frogs, Tropical Fish, Chickens, Desserts, The Masters, Gardens and Gates, Crows, Cars  and in 2020 we are painting Seagulls.

2015 - "The FireHall 1910" Painting.. It was given to the newly built Gabriola firehall along with 8 other large paintings of firefighters created in a workshop by our GOS members.

2016 - Which Came First the Chicken or the Egg.  Great creativity coming through here and a grouping of 2x4 ft painting sold.  Gardens and Gates - another series 3x4 feet in two panels.

2017 - The Group of Seven two Paintings, Lawren Harris and Franklin Carmichael.

2019 - The two Gustav Klimt paintings were created.  The Woman in Gold and Medicine.  These difficult paintings took months to create.  We gave talks about Gustav Klimt to the Federation of Canadain Artists.  We also painted a few of our own copies to understand his techniques.

2020 - Seagulls was the series for January.  They were well recieved and many sold.

2021 -  2020 We decided to learn about Vincent Van Gogh. The "The Cafe Scene" and "The Poughman" were chosen.  Covid started in March and we met Masked and Washed to design the puzzle effect and choose the colours he would have used, to discuss his brush strokes and start our research and paintings.  By May thru October 2020 we had completed our Van Gogh paintings and hung them October 10&11th with 3 of our artists during the Thanks Giving Tour. The Irises, Starry Night, two Self-portaits, the Work Boots were completed and a take on Charlie Brown -Van Gogh style.

2022 - The current discussion is "These Boots are Meant for Walking". Yes, we are considering shoes. Blue Suedes, Dorthys red shoes, closet full of shoes and maybe even Van Gogh's boots will reappear.  More to follow.

{Both the Series Theme Painting and the Signature Painting Composite are created together in a puzzle piece format to work artistically together.  With the Series piece we can work in our studios and our own pace, however the Composite piece requires a set format from the artist chosen, an art education research and we must match with the artist beside us.  We create two paintings, ususally 3x 4feet each year and hang our individual pieces to be part of the themed show as well.}

Shows and Events

January 6- February 10th, 2019 the Group of Several completed the Gustav Klimt two 4x5 ft Composites of the Woman in Gold and Medicine, the Woman in Red. It was gallery displayed at the Church St. Medical Clinic.

May to June 6th, 2019 The Group of Several are hanging the Klimt show along with 3-4 new pieces at the Professional Centre Gallery, 590 North Road.  On May 18th, 2019 2-4 pm there will be a reception and talk about Gustav Klimt and the education derived by the members.

July 5-7th 2019, at the Gabriola Art & Heritage Hall Gallery, the Group of Several are showing thier collective process in creating a Series or a Composite of works which alternate each year.  They are also showing the best pieces of their membership to Gabriola Visitors on that weekend.

For January 2020, the Group of Several hung the Series of Seagulls to hang at the Medical Clinic Gallery.

In 2021 the decision has been made to research and paint two Composites of Van Gogh, The Cafe and the Ploughman.

January 2020 the Seagulls flew up on the walls of the Church St. Medical Clinic.  They were raucously received.

March 2020 continuing COVID caused less art gatherings and yet we were well organized to create the Van Gogh "The Cafe Scene" and the "Ploughman in the Fields" as 3x4 Puzzle Composites.  We each painted either one of Van Gogh's paintings or a semblance of his style of painting to learn the techniques of this master.  We read a lot of books and research on line, to understand the historical era.

October 2020  Covid- restrictions.  Three of the GOS members created a show of their personal works of art and hung the two 3x4 ft Vincent Van GOGH paintings plus the ones each artist created.  We created a 6 minute movie of the 7- almost 8 year history of the Group of Several Collective.

Studio Procedures: The Group of Several, or GOS is of course more than two GOSlings.  We all belong to the Palette People of Gabriola Island, BC.

Tuesdays we paint at the Rollo Centre on Gabriola Island and receive a wealth of information from demonstrations and ideas from members.  Their are two formal workshops a year.
On Fridays we paint all afternoon with great seriousness and only a slight amount of GOSsiping. We showcase our art throughout the island.
Each of us has a very distinct style.

Both the Series Theme Painting and the Signature Painting Composite are created together in a puzzle piece format to work artistically together.  With the Series piece we can work in our studios and our own pace, however the Composite piece requires a set format from the artist chosen, an art education research and we must match with the artist beside us.  We create two paintings, ususally 3x 4feet each year and hang our individual pieces to be part of the themed show as well.

HISTORY 2013 -The GROUP of SEVERAL evolved from committed artists volunteering with the After School Art Club grades 4-7 of Gabriola Island BC. The Students fundraise and attend of their own initiative, under the guidance of their school.

Judith Madsen, a passionate art teacher, believes that art helps students think creatively outside and inside boxes; to have a joyful outlet in their lives; to sit quietly and focus; and best of all, to accomplish their own individual work of art, increasing self-esteem.

Since 2006, Judith Madsen has been contributing as one of the volunteer school instructors. In 2013, she agreed to teach the volunteers as well. The GROUP of SEVERAL was formed and took off as strongly as the childrens' group has done. It is now November 2020 and the GOS currently has 6 members.  They have varied from 12-5 members.  The work within the group is strengthening with every show opportunity.

Exhibiting Opportunities

  • Down the hallway of the Medical Centre will be individual art pieces from The Group of Several in creative attempts to study Klimt's process.
  • As a group we learned many art techniques creating the Klimt paintings.  Expressionism, use of gold, silver leaf, Klimts symbols, and Egyptian and Japanese styles.  Klimts love of fabrics and design is intricately detailed.

July 05-07th 2019 The Group of Several will display the previous composite pieces that are in various Art Collections and the current 7 Members paintings at the Gabriola Arts Council & Heritage Hall/Gallery on south road beside the post office.

January- February 2020 the Group of Several hung the two large Seagulls by the Seashore paintings 3x4 feet and two separate composites by Esther Robison, Itsy Bitsy Bikini and Darla Jamieson, Yogulls.

October 10&11th 2020 three, Judith Madsen, Jenn Feenan and Judith Maden, of the Group of Several showed individual paintings at the Rollo Centre on Gabriola Ilsand.  It was very successful, serious art viewers and buyers braved COVID and attended the Masked Event. Alcohol for the hands was served.  A 6 minute video of the past 7 plus years was created and the showing of the Vincent Van Gogh paintings for 2021 were hung.
